I think maybe the principal of K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple......) needs to be applied here. I don't think these trains are halving or quartering anything. I think they are "minus-ing" at a steady rate.... 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, crunch.

No quantums or wormholes are needed to figure this out. They just had lousy engineers at the controls.
