Astronomical Society of Greenbelt

Image of solar eclipse

Approximately 225 people and at least 6 dogs gathered at the Greenbelt Observatory to watch the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The Astronomical Society of Greenbelt provided safe telescope views and free eclipse glasses.

Our monthly meeting for April will be dedicated to people sharing pictures and stories of the eclipse. In addition to the Greenbelt Observatory, some ASG members traveled to the path of totality. This meeting on April 25 at 7:00 pm is free and open to the public. It will be held at the Greenbelt Community Center.

Explore

The ASG strives to make exploration of our universe accessible to a wide audience through regular lectures, star parties, and occasional presentations of simulation and virtual-reality software for modeling space. Our events are held in person when possible but are also made available for live streaming.

Educate

Our monthly lecture series often features guest speakers from the nearby NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the University of Maryland, the JHU Applied Physics Lab, the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, and other astronomical agencies and groups in the area. Dedicated ASG members also share their knowledge at star parties and through formal presentations.

Excite

We seek to excite people of all ages and backgrounds in the wonders of astronomy through sharing our passion. We hope to inspire the younger members of our society to consider pursuing careers in STEM professions. Whatever your age, it’s never too late to get excited about space!
